NIRA Intensifies Mass Registration in Kayunga
With the nationwide registration exercise entering its final days, NIRA has intensified outreach across Kayunga District through sub-county centres and schools while urging residents to register, update records, and collect thousands of ready national identity cards before the June 30 deadline.

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has intensified the ongoing mass registration and national identity card update exercise across Kayunga District to ensure that every eligible Ugandan is registered and issued with a National Identification Number (NIN).

The exercise is being conducted at sub-county headquarters and schools, targeting residents who have never registered, children eligible for registration, and individuals seeking to correct or update details on their national records.

Speaking to the media, Kayunga District Registrar Muhammad Mpiima said the intensified exercise was necessitated by the continued number of residents who remain outside the national register despite previous registration drives.

“We are still receiving many people who have never been registered. That is why we have intensified this exercise at sub-county level and in schools so that everyone gets an opportunity to acquire a National Identification Number and a national identity card,” Mpiima said.

He explained that the exercise is also helping citizens who need to correct errors on their national identity records, replace lost cards, or update personal information.

“This registration is not only for first-time applicants. It is also for people who need to correct their particulars or resolve issues with their records. We encourage everyone with pending issues to visit the nearest registration centre before the exercise closes,” he added.

Mpiima reminded the public that the nationwide registration campaign will end on June 30, 2026, and urged residents not to wait until the last minute to access the services.

“The exercise ends on June 30, 2026. We appeal to all eligible residents to use the remaining time because after the deadline, they may have to wait for another registration programme,” he said.

The district registrar also revealed that the distribution of previously processed national identity cards is ongoing at the NIRA office in Kayunga Town, noting that the majority of the cards are already available for collection.

“About 90 percent of the national identity cards are ready. We call upon residents who applied earlier to come and collect their IDs from the NIRA office in Kayunga. These documents are very important and should not remain unclaimed,” Mpiima emphasized.

He noted that possession of a national identity card is essential for accessing government services, opening bank accounts, registering SIM cards, securing employment, participating in elections, and conducting various legal and financial transactions.

NIRA has appealed to local leaders, school administrators, and community members to mobilize residents to participate in the exercise before the deadline, saying increased registration will strengthen national planning, improve service delivery, and ensure that every eligible Ugandan is captured in the national register.
